Is Your Nonprofit Using Digital Marketing To Connect With Donors? You Should Be.
Digital marketing can open many doors to connect with potential donors.
The internet officially turned 40 years old in 2023. Yes, really. And yet many nonprofits still have not fully leaned in to the potential of digital marketing to make their lives easier and more effectively accomplish their mission. If you’ve been looking for a sign to do more with digital - this is it. Here’s why:
1. More Donors Are Inspired to Give By Email & Social Media
According to research from Funraise (2020), donors are 26 percent more inspired to give through email marketing and 25 percent more likely through social media. Double the Donation (2023) says that email campaigns generate approximately 28 percent of online nonprofit revenue.
If you aren’t making appeals to your donors through email, and maintaining a meaningful presence on social media, then you are missing out on potential supporters.
2. A Modern And User-Friendly Website Is Key
Third on Funraise’s list of marketing tools was your website coming in with 17 percent. In fact, in a recent survey by Qgiv (2023) the number one reason Gen X’ers choose not to donate to an organization is because of an outdated website. Your website is your “front-porch” and the hub for every other digital campaign that you do - make sure it is updated and looking snazzy!
Classy (2022) advises that you make sure you have multiple ways to donate on your website. They say that the “average one-time donation was nearly 1.5x more” when nonprofits offered ACH, PayPal, and digital wallet payments. Squarespace websites (like this one) also offer payment methods such as Stripe that can help make the donation process easier.
Funraise also found that 55% percent of people prefer to donate online using their credit or debit cards. People want to give digitally, so, make sure your website is capable and secure!
Is it time to update your website?

3. Are You Sharing Quality Content?
As a nonprofit you undoubtedly have many stories of how your work has impacted people personally. But have you been sharing those stories with the world? Your success stories can make great content to fuel your website, email, and social media campaigns.
Over 70 percent of nonprofit leaders say they lack a content strategy. According to NonprofitsSource (2017), another 40 percent say they struggle to produce engaging content.
It doesn’t have to be hard! New tools like Canva can help you make graphics on the fly and AI’s, such as Chat GPT, can help you have a draft of your story in seconds if you feed it the important details.
But make sure you are using those true stories I know you have - and use them strategically. It can be tempting to churn out mediocre content, but its better in the long-run to take your time and tell good stories that make people believe in your mission.
